A trader made nearly half a million dollars by predicting the removal of Nicolás Maduro just before it was publicly declared, raising questions about whether someone profited from inside knowledge of the US operation.
Predictions made on the forecasting site, a crypto-powered platform, that the Venezuelan president would be no longer in control by the month's conclusion surged in the time leading up to former President Trump declared on the weekend that Maduro had been seized.
A particular user, which became a member recently and placed four wagers, all on political events in Venezuela, made more than $436K from a modest bet of $32.5K.
Who placed the bet is a mystery. The anonymous account had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.
Trading information shows that traders estimated the likelihood of a political change at just 6.5% in the midday period of the prior Friday.
But the market's assessment had jumped to over 10% by the end of the day and skyrocketed in the early hours of the next day, indicating a sudden change in betting activity right before the public announcement was made.
"This specific wager has all the signs of a bet based on inside information," stated a financial reform advocate.
Several of other traders also profited significant sums from bets on the same outcome.
Elected officials are beginning to pay attention.
A bill introduced on Monday would prevent government employees from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a bet.
Forecasting platforms have become increasingly popular in recent years, with participants able to bet on everything from sports outcomes to politics.
Prediction markets encountered regulatory challenges under the previous administration. Yet it has experienced less resistance during the Trump presidency.
Using confidential knowledge is a crime in the securities markets, but there are less oversight in the prediction market industry.
A spokesperson for a competing service said their site "strictly forbids insider trading of any form."
