Nearly 25,000 Left Without Electricity in South-East Queensland and Victoria Following Powerful Weather Systems

Approximately twenty-five thousand homes in Queensland's southeast found themselves experiencing outages on Monday morning after severe thunderstorms swept through the state, producing powerful gusts reaching 109 kilometers per hour.

Massive Frozen Precipitation and Extensive Impact

Homeowners witnessed giant hailstones as large as 7cm in particular locations. Weather authorities announced that multiple regions across the state had been impacted by significant hail.

Utility workers were focused on reestablishing energy supply throughout the impacted areas, with approximately seventy teams working to handle the extensive power failures.

Southern State's Storm Challenges

At the same time, approximately 1,000 residents in the southern state also encountered energy failures after the capital city experienced its wettest day in a year and a half.

Rescue organizations handled nearly 600 emergency reports across the state, mainly for building damage but also for downed trees and water accumulation.

  • The Werribee area - experienced considerable storm damage
  • Hoppers Crossing suburb - various rescue reports
  • Wyndham - 179 emergency requests

At one point on yesterday, over 28k power users in the state were without power.

Weather Forecast

Damp conditions were forecast to persist along much of eastern Queensland this coming days as a low-pressure trough continued to draw in moisture against the coast.

Tomorrow was expected to become the wettest day, with ongoing thunderstorm potential expected across different parts of both states.

Health Warning

Public health experts warned that there was an increased chance of weather-related respiratory issues across the northern rural areas, particularly given the current weather patterns.

This caution comes after historical occurrences where similar conditions led to significant health impacts in the area.
