Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research suggests that individuals who come off popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People buying these drugs need to be aware of the danger of quick weight regain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.

Weighing Approaches

The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that people who lose weight through dieting typically have a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Experts believe the mode of action of the jabs explains the accelerated weight return.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this medication means hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Condition?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

People who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and you're instantly ravenous," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is compounded if users have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Growing Interest

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among females than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing behavioural support.
